Many kokeshi pair a rounded head with a turned wooden body, but proportions, construction and painted details vary. A visual resemblance alone is not enough to identify a region, maker or date.
Traditional and creative kokeshi
Traditional kokeshi are discussed through regional lineages and inherited practice. Creative kokeshi are generally approached through individual artistic expression. The boundary deserves context, not a quick good-versus-bad ranking.
Place matters
Hot-spring communities, local woodworkers, visitors and changing markets all form part of the story. Regional pages on this site therefore connect objects to places while keeping current travel details separate from historical claims.
Made by turning and painting wood
A lathe is central to many accounts of kokeshi making. Wood selection, drying, assembly, painting and finishing can differ by region and maker, so our process guide presents a framework rather than a universal recipe.
Kokeshi today
Kokeshi can be encountered as folk craft, souvenir, collectible, design object and contemporary art. Those categories overlap, and a responsible description should say which evidence supports the label being used.
