Regional origins

Official introductions connect traditional kokeshi with Tohoku and with communities around hot-spring areas. A single birthplace story can flatten a history that developed through several places and practices.

Objects made for movement

Names, groups and collecting

Classification became one way to discuss regional difference. The labels used by collectors and institutions are useful, but the site will not present an unreviewed count as permanent or universally agreed.

Modern change
