What records can establish
Dated catalogues, books, institutional records and named objects can show when a spelling or label was in use. They do not automatically prove why a word first emerged.
Interpretations need attribution
When a scholar, museum or maker offers an interpretation, it should be attributed to that source. A plausible explanation is not the same as a settled etymology.
Later stories
Memorable explanations can circulate widely online because they are easy to retell. Repetition is evidence of popularity, not proof of origin.
What remains open
This release does not declare one etymology definitive. A fuller article requires early textual evidence and specialist scholarship that can be checked directly.
