Limit harsh light
Paint and wood can change with prolonged exposure. Avoid intense direct sunlight and rotate displays if light cannot be reduced.
Choose stability
Rapid changes in heat and humidity can stress wooden objects. Keep them away from heaters, air-conditioning outlets and damp exterior walls.
Clean cautiously
Do not start with water, oil, solvent or household polish. Loose paint, uncertain coatings or staining need specialist advice before treatment.
Keep a condition record
Dated photographs make slow changes easier to notice. Record cracks, lifting paint and previous repairs without trying to hide them.
