What sōsaku kokeshi are
The Japanese American National Museum dates a trend of creative, or sōsaku, kokeshi to the years after the Second World War. While generally keeping traditional construction, sōsaku kokeshi may add carving, designs in non-traditional colours, asymmetric shapes or accessories. Some designs developed into mass-produced kokeshi that came to represent Japan as a whole rather than one region.
A Fukushima Museum bulletin divides kokeshi made today into traditional kokeshi, which value inherited forms, and creative kokeshi, which reflect the maker's own ideas. It adds that makers of traditional kokeshi often make creative kokeshi as well.
A different organising principle
Regional lineage is central to many discussions of traditional kokeshi. Creative work is often better organised around individual makers, studios, exhibitions and artistic development.
Research before attribution
Names, dates, awards and quotations appear only after checking official or first-person sources. One documented maker who works in both fields is Akira Suzuki of Sendai, whose profile is linked from the makers directory.
