A lineage name, not a prefecture-wide label
Yamagata City distinguishes the Yamagata group from Zaō, and identifies Hijiori as another tradition in the prefecture. A seller's location in Yamagata therefore does not establish the lineage of an object.

Look beyond a single flower
The city guide records cherry blossom, four-petalled plum and safflower designs. Other traditions also use floral painting. Use the small head and slender body as comparison points alongside the pattern and the object's documentation.
