Kokeshi Condition Checklist

Condition descriptions should be specific and visible. They should not be used to manufacture an age, rarity or authenticity claim.

Structure

Look for splits, open joins, warping, instability, missing parts and impact damage. Ask whether a crack moves or has been filled, and request scale-referenced close-ups.

Surface and colour

Check uneven fading, abrasions, flaking, stains, adhesive residue and areas that may have been overpainted. Lighting and white balance can make colour comparisons unreliable.

Cleaning and repair history

Ask about oil, wax, polish, water, solvent, consolidation and repainting. An unknown treatment is not automatically harmful, but it affects the questions a conservator or future owner may need to ask.

Packing and arrival record

Discuss immobilisation, moisture protection and outer-box strength with the seller. Photograph the parcel and object on arrival before making any intervention, particularly if an insurance claim may be needed.
